The morning the Grammy Awards nominations (@recordingacademy) were announced, the Chainsmokers (@thechainsmokers)
were in line waiting for coffee and doughnuts.
“It was 8 a.m. in Boston, and our tour manager was with us, plus a bunch of strangers,” says Alex Pall, one half of the EDM duo nominated for three Grammys, including Best New Artist. “We bought everyone coffee!” This year, the Chainsmokers will release their first full-length album and hit the road for a 40-city North American tour, but Alex recalls the moment everything clicked: the night they created “Roses,” their second single. “Up to that point, we had always been kind of trying to make music that fit into something. ‘Can DJs play this in clubs? Will people be able to play it at festivals? Does this sound like what’s popular right now?’” explains Alex. “‘Roses’ was one of the first songs we made where we wanted to play it over and over again just for ourselves.”
